Andrew S. Neely was born in Tennessee in 1952. He graduated with high honors from
the University of Tennessee in 1974 with a B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering.
Andy received his J.D. degree in 1977 from the University of Tennessee, where he
was on the University of Tennessee Law Review, and a member of the Order of the
Coif.
He entered patent practice with the firm of Richards, Harris & Medlock in Dallas,
Texas, and joined this firm in 1982. Andy's practice emphasizes patent matters relating
to electronics and start-up companies, and litigation of patent, trade secret, trademark,
and copyright matters. He has also served as an adjunct professor of law at the
University of Tennessee, where he taught intellectual property law. His practice
includes matters relating to the technologies of inkjet and laser printers, integrated
circuit manufacturing and circuit design, vibration detection and electronic analyzers,
ultrasonic instruments, oil analysis instruments, infrared and visual image analysis,
gamma thermometers, mass flow rate and level detectors, electric motor monitors,
communications technology, counter-electronic surveillance equipment, automobile
transmissions and winches, food service equipment, specialized pump technology and
boat design.
Andy is a frequent speaker on intellectual property matters to professional groups,
entrepreneurial organizations, and classes at the University of Tennessee. Recent
talks include multiple lectures at the University of Tennessee to Professor Lynn
Young's graduate level classes in entrepreneurial business, a presentation at a
Tech 2020 seminar on the Top Ten IP Mistakes made by start-up companies, and a speech
on Copyright Law Developments in the Sixth Circuit for the Tennessee Intellectual
Property Law Association.
Presently, Mr. Neely is co-chair of the Technology and Management Committee of the
Knoxville Bar Association, and is active in the annual KBA Technology Forum.
He is a member of the State Bars of Tennessee and Texas, and is admitted to several
federal district courts, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Court of Appeals
for the Federal Circuit. He is registered to practice before the Patent and Trademark
Office, and is a member of the American Intellectual Property Association, American
Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Association, and the Knoxville Bar Association.
