
J. David Gonce was born in Union, South Carolina in 1972. He graduated from the University of South Carolina in Columbia in May 1994 with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering, magna cum laude. He received his J.D. degree, cum laude, from the Duke University School of Law in Durham, N.C. in May 1999.
Prior to attending law school, David worked in the chemical manufacturing industry at Ethox Chemicals in Greenville, S.C. There he supervised a production shift and was involved in the manufacture of a wide variety of surfactants and textile chemicals. He has particular experience in the manufacture of ethoxylate and propoxylate polymers of alcohols, amines, and organic acids, and in the manufacture of esters and phosphate esters utilizing these polymers.
David's practice includes intellectual property litigation, preparation and prosecution of trademark and patent applications, patent and trademark searches, and patentability opinions. He has prepared and prosecuted patent applications relating to pulp and paper processing, environmental remediation, film laminates, pharmaceuticals, various mechanical devices, and ornamental product designs. He is admitted to the State Bar of Tennessee and the Federal Court of the Eastern District of Tennessee. He has also been involved in several patent litigations relating to environmental remediation, film laminations, and reconfigurable signage. He is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and is a member of the Knoxville Bar Association and the Tennessee Bar Association.
