Before law school, Roby was employed as a sales and consulting engineer for Nalco Company (formerly known as Nalco Chemical Company). While with Nalco, Roby consulted with various facilities regarding their heat exchange equipment including chillers, boilers, and chill/steam loops. His responsibility as a consultant was to help keep the equipment working efficiently using state-of-the-art proprietary chemicals, various control technologies, and his own engineering knowledge. The chemicals he worked with included anti-scaling agents, anti-corrosion agents, and anti-bacterial agents, many of which were developed by Nalco. Some of Roby's clients while with Nalco included the McKinley Climatic Laboratory at Eglin Air Force Base; Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola, Florida; Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi; the United States Naval Air Station in Pensacola, Florida; and the Honeywell Friction Materials plant in Lynn Haven, Florida.

During his second year, he was the head of the Budget and Finance Committee, the student committee responsible for allocating over $1 million of student activity fees to various student activity projects including the International Student Organization, the campus radio station (WEGL), and the University Programs Council.

As an Auburn University Singer, Roby had the opportunity to travel the country and Europe, perform at various locations such as Disneyland in California and the Lincoln Center in New York City, and sing the national anthem solo for the Auburn versus Tennessee basketball game at Auburn in 1996.

Roby's private interests include writing music, writing prose, exploring the outdoors through camping, fishing, and hiking, and participating in various ministry activities with his church.
